Six people bilked out of $30,700 in immigration scam

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

A man scammed $30,700 in cash payments from six people by claiming he could help them fix their immigration status, an arrest warrant affidavit states.

The man, 61, uses several alias but was charged under the alias Jesus Lopez with theft and money laundering, $20,000 to $100,000, authorities said. He was held in Bexar County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Investigators said they began investigating Lopez when a victim, Juan Nicolas Estrada, told U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in San Antonio he had paid Lopez $7,000 to secure immigration documents in the belief that Lopez was a retired immigration agent.

Lopez asked all six to pay cash and provide photos — in one case, he took the Mexican birth certificates of a family desperate to leave Mexico; in another, he fingerprinted a man who sought a resident alien card and a social security number, the affidavit states. None received the promised documents.

Bogus Checks Are Bouncing Through San Antonio

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Consumers are urged to look at their account statements. You might want to take a close look at your checking account statement for any mysterious charges.  Local banks and credit unions disclosed that hundreds if not thousands of counterfeit checks each for an amount just under $30 were written on their customers accounts recently.

San Antonio Credit Union first was contacted by a customer about a suspicious transaction Feb 1st.  Counterfeit checks happen now and then, but in this case it wasn’t just us and SACU, it was just about every financial institution in town that got hit with this.  Said John Worthington.  Authorities estimate that 1500 counterfeit checks and possibly many more were drafted like this.

More Corruption In Judicial District

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

In Kerrville, Texas employees in the 198th Judicial District hope there’s truth in the old adage that bad things come in threes.  For the third time in more than a year, a former official with the Hill Country district is facing corruption charges.

Tanna Mozel Tyler Hurt was indicted Monday on one charge of theft by a public servant, five charges of tampering with a government record and 29 forgery charges, adding to a streak that has shocked and embarrassedits current workers.

Many fear this will erode the confidence and public perception in particular after former District Attorney Ron Sutton was charged.  He later pleaded guilty to two counts of misapplication of fiduciary property and was sentenced to two years of deferred adjudication and ordered to pay $20,000 restitution.

The new indictments alleges Hurt had taken money orders he paid to her since mid 2009.  One individual paid her 122 dollars every month with a blank money order, records show that nothing has been paid towards his fees & restitution.  Which will lead to a Motion to revoke probation and many years behind bars for Mr. lopez.  All because greedy county officials.

Now, how many people had their probation or parole revoked because of this?  If you feel that you were wrongfully arrested, detained, or questioned because of similar actions by the city of Kerrville, contact my law office today.  Not only will I pursue legal correction of your status, i will correct your record and file a lawsuit against Kerrville and every individual responsible.
